About Alva Health

Alva Health is developing a wearable neuromonitoring platform with the first indication in real-time stroke
detection. We are a Yale University spinout company that is backed by Techstars, the National Science
Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Alva Health’s mission is to develop a wearable medical
device to monitor stroke at home and to allow for the initiation of emergency response in a timely
manner. Our patented technology uses wearable sensors to continuously monitor and detect
hemiparesis, one of the hallmarks of stroke onset. Once deployed, our solution will dramatically improve
stroke emergency response and increase the number of patients receiving IV tPA and other reperfusion
therapies in the acute setting. Alva Health was recently named the Grand Prize winner out of 1100
applicants at the 2021 MedTech Innovator competition. The company has raised $2M in non-dilutive
grant funding to date, and we are preparing to raise a Seed round to accelerate through the next
development phases.

As a postdoctoral associate, you will contribute to the development of our first product, a wrist-worn
device for continuous, long-term, real-time monitoring and detection of stroke onset at home, by
leveraging your deep understanding of real-time time-series analysis, machine learning, deep learning,
data science, bioinformatics, and cloud and edge computing. You will co-lead the analysis of results from
our ongoing clinical studies, and present key findings in journals and at conferences alongside executive
management. Your work will deepen our understanding about the role of wearable sensor data as a tool
for monitoring and detection of stroke onset, with potential applications to other movement-based
neurological conditions and brain injury.

Your Role at Alva Health:

-
You will have an opportunity to work with biomedical time series including audio and video, single modality and multimodal wearable sensor data, task-based and passively collected data, activities of daily living surveys, and electronic health record data
-
Conduct statistical analysis of emerging results from our feasibility studies
-
Create models for the prediction of passive/active states and sleep/wake states
-
Participate in design control procedures for our solution
-
Perform literature reviews to remain current with the latest techniques, and computational tools, and propose new research directions
-
Draft scientific abstracts and manuscripts for publication in journals and presentation at conferences
-
Contribute to grant applications and investor presentations
-
Contribute to the design of future clinical trials

Preferred Qualifications:

-
Recent Ph.D. in engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics
-
Domain expertise with wearable sensors or other biomedical time-series data, though experience with other large data sets will be considered
-
Track record of success as an independent researcher, demonstrated by first-author peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, etc.
-
Experience with R, Python, MATLAB, or Julia
-
Experience with C/C++
-
Knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git
